Definitely feel like it went too far. For starters, I think it’s a generally good principle to not put up statues for people who are alive. Men and women have been known to fall incomprehensibly far in a short amount of time (I.e. Judas Iscariot…). But more importantly, as you pointed out in the article, these people would likely reject any statue of a saint. Very inconsistent, especially imprudent.

It’s not the second commandment that prohibits “graven images.” It’s part of the first.
